Context

Hub do Desenvolvedor is a library of 20+ APIs for developers: CNPJ lookups straight from the Federal Revenue, CPF, postal codes, shipping calculation, tracking, Simples Nacional, registration data and tax information, all in a single plan with JSON or XML responses. I worked as a full stack PHP developer, building the APIs and working on the website's front-end.

Challenge

Anyone who needs company, address or shipping data runs into CAPTCHAs, sites that are down and different formats from each source. The APIs had to query those sources, standardize the response, handle volume and track each plan's credits. The website had to make another developer understand in seconds what each API returns and start testing.

The product, section by section

The most important parts of the site, from first contact to sign-up, with the APIs behind each one.

  1. 01 / 08

    The promise

"CNPJ API, updated straight from the Federal Revenue with no Captcha": the headline cycles between CNPJ, CPF and CEP, and beside it two phones show the JSON response. A single button, "Free trial".

  2. 02 / 08

What it is and the numbers

The product explained in one sentence (20+ APIs, data straight from the Federal Revenue, no CAPTCHA, in JSON), why to use it (daily monitoring and updates when the source changes) and the numbers bar: 24+ APIs, 39+ queries per minute, online 24/7.

  3. 03 / 08

    The web services

The 8 main APIs in cards with an icon, a line about what each returns and a link to its details page: CNPJ, CPF, CEP, shipping, tracking, Simples Nacional, registration data and tax information.

  4. 04 / 08

    API page with live testing

Each API has its own page with its differentiators (no CAPTCHA, straight from the Federal Revenue, JSON/XML, use as many IPs as you want), a real JSON response example and the "Try it" block: the developer types a CNPJ and sees the API respond right there, before creating an account.

  5. 05 / 08

    Credit-based plans

Four plans (Startup, EPP, MPE and Enterprise) with the number of CNPJ and CPF credits, unlimited CEP, all web services, JSON/XML and no waiting period, with a monthly/annual toggle. Behind the scenes, the APIs deduct and track each account's credits.

  6. 06 / 08

    See the response

A shortcut to JSON response examples from the most used APIs (CNPJ, CPF, CEP and shipping), because developers decide by looking at the response, not the copy.

  7. 07 / 08

    Call to subscribe

"Subscribe to Hub do Desenvolvedor now and get instant access to every WS", with the free trial button leading to sign-up.

  8. 08 / 08

    FAQ and footer

An FAQ with integration questions (what data comes back, how credits and plans work, how to integrate, what happens if you go over the limit) and the footer with quick access to the most popular lookups.

Visual System

Tech blue on a light background, with code (the JSON response) as the main image: for a developer audience, the API response is the best showcase. Each plan gets its own color to make comparison easier.

Takeaways

In a product for developers, the API is the marketing. Standardizing responses from very different sources into predictable JSON was the most important back-end work, and on the front end what converts most is letting people test: showing the real response and allowing a lookup on the page itself answers the question before sign-up.
